Neither specified Dalibor article reported a programme for the practical examinations of pupils of the Conservatory’s lower classes. However, the review published by Dalibor 10/8/1859 did comment upon the general standard of the pupils, noting that ‘Pupils of the first instrumental classes, in which we discerned many rare talents, made great progress in the first year, demonstrating great technical ability in performing difficult exercises; only in the ’cello under Professor [Julius] Goltermann did we observe in the pupils a little stagnation.’ The number of pupils in the institute’s first class was noted to be 70, comprising 3 on the cornet (Flügelhorn), 3 tbn, 8 hn, 4 bn, 5 cl, 6 ob, 4 fl, 6 db, 6 vc, 22 vl.
Interestingly, Goltermann’s standing among Czech sections of Prague’s musical environment from the late 1850s. This was evident in criticism from the Czech periodical Dalibor of his teaching at the Conservatory and of his annual chamber music productions. Early in the 1860s he left Prague to take up a position in Stuttgart.
