Commentary:

Prager Morgenpost 13/2/1863 reported of this event: ‘Masked ball [Maskenball], On Carnival Monday [the day prior to Shrove Tuesday and the start of Lent] the dance teacher Mr Friedrich Feigert arranges in the Konvikt Hall a Kikeriki-Spektakelball. The masked procession [Maskenzüge] and Dances will be very attractively arranged and it is only to be expected that the Hall will be very numerously attended.’

An advance report was also published by Národní listy 13/2/1862. This noted that ‘On Carnival Monday dance master Mr Feigert arranges in the Konvikt Hall a Ball under the title „Kikerikispektakle“ with a great masked procession and combined with various other diverse entertainments.’ An advertisement was published by Národní listy on 16/2/1863, the day of the event:

Konvikt Hall.
Today
great Ball á la
Debardeur
and
Kikiriki,
arranged
Bedř. Feigert.
Commencing at 7       Ending in the morning.

The rendering of Feigert’s first name in its Czech form Bedřich was notable, perhaps as a means of the advertisement appealing to the Czech partisan public.

An elaborate and substantial 14-line advertisment for this event was published by Prager Morgenpost 16/2/1863: ‘Konvikt Hall. Today Carnival Monday arranges Friedrich Feigert a splendid Debardeur- and Kikeriki-Ball. Humorous hour [Narren-Stunde - lit. Fool’s hour] with comic Tournament of the Knight Don Quixotte with his page Sancho Pansa. After 11 o’clock great masked procession, Rendezvous of all the Debardeurs and Kikerikis, who will then perform the Calcuttan Cockerels Dance. Elegant arrangements, good music, inexhaustible humour, interesting costumes, straightforward Toilette, Cheap admission, Dancing without end.’
